Spot the Spawning: Surveying torgoch

Last week, we hosted our first ‘Spot the Spawning’ event at known spawning sites near Llyn Padarn, as part of our ongoing Torgoch project, funded by the Heritage Lottery. Volunteers joined us for 15-minute surveys just before dusk, hoping to catch a glimpse of spawning fish.

The event brought together a diverse group of conservation enthusiasts and local residents, all keen to learn more about the spawning habits of the Torgoch. Llyn Padarn remains one of the last strongholds for this species in Wales, making the survey a vital part of its conservation efforts.

Participants were led by our Principal Fisheries Advisor, Dr Antony Smith, who shared valuable insights into the Torgoch’s life cycle, habitat needs, and the challenges the species faces. The session also included expert tips on identifying spawning behavior, such as recognising redds (nests) and observing courtship displays.

Although only one Torgoch was spotted, the three kingfisher sightings more than made up for it in the eyes of our volunteers!

e-DNA

Volunteers also had the opportunity to watch an e-DNA survey in action, learning how this technique is being used to gather information about Torgoch spawning habits and improve conservation efforts.

If you're interested in joining a 'Spot the Spawning' survey, we’ll be back at Llyn Padarn on December 17th for another session. Head to our events page to sign up!
