North Wales Rivers Trust at the Ireland Stillwaters Conference

At the start of October we had the honor of speaking at the Ireland Stillwaters Conference in Einskillen -on behalf of Afonydd Cymru. Our CEO Laura gave a presentation about our Floating Wetlands project and how we work to bring people and nature closer together through a unique approach to community engagement in Wales.

Presenting our project at the Ireland Stillwaters Conference allowed us to exchange ideas and learn from others committed to protecting freshwater ecosystems.

One of our standout projects, the Floating Wetlands initiative on Ynys Môn, is a great example of how we work to enhance biodiversity in still water environments.

Inspired by innovative projects from around the world, our pilot study on Llyn Maelog aims to reduce nutrient levels through plant uptake while providing habitat for aquatic life. This project is part of a comparative study of three lakes in North Wales, exploring how floating wetlands and targeted farming interventions can influence water quality and support native species.

Our work on Llyn Maelog is a collaborative effort with Ynys Môn Council, WCVA, and the Welsh Government, blending scientific research with community stewardship.
